Copyright @ 2008 Elsevier B.V.Extensive multilingualism is one of the most important and fundamental principles of the European Union (EU). However, a large number of languages (currently 23) hinders communication and imposes substantial financial and legal costs. On the other hand, the reduction of the number of languages would disenfranchise some or many EU citizens. We use the results of a survey on languages and argue that even though a linguistic reform reducing the number of languages is unlikely to gain sufficient political support today, this may change in the future since young people are more proficient at speaking foreign languages

Emissivity for CO_2 at Elevated Pressures

Total absorptivity measurements have been carried out at room temperature as a function of partial pressure of CO_2 and of total pressure using nitrogen as pressurizing gas

Phonon Raman scattering of perovskite LaNiO3 thin films

We report an investigation of perovskite-type LaNiO3 thin films by Raman scattering in both various scattering configurations and as a function of temperature. The room-temperature Raman spectra and the associated phonon mode assignment provide reference data for phonon calculations and for the use of Raman scattering for structural investigations of LaNiO3, namely the effect of strain in thin films or heterostructures. The temperature-dependent Raman spectra from 80 to 900 K are characterized by the softening of the rotational A1g mode, which suggest a decreasing rhombohedral distortion towards the ideal cubic structure with increasing temperature

Morse homology for the heat flow

We use the heat flow on the loop space of a closed Riemannian manifold to construct an algebraic chain complex. The chain groups are generated by perturbed closed geodesics. The boundary operator is defined in the spirit of Floer theory by counting, modulo time shift, heat flow trajectories that converge asymptotically to nondegenerate closed geodesics of Morse index difference one.Comment: 89 pages, 3 figure

Correlations in hot and dense quark matter

We present a relativistic three-body equation to investigate three-quark clusters in hot and dense quark matter. To derive such an equation we use the Dyson equation approach. The equation systematically includes the Pauli blocking factors as well as the self energy corrections of quarks. Special relativity is realized through the light front form. Presently we use a zero-range force and investigate the Mott transition.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure, Few-Body Systems style file

Integrating Case-Based Reasoning with Adaptive Process Management

    Get PDF
The need for more flexiblity of process-aware information systems (PAIS) has been discussed for several years and different approaches for adaptive process management have emerged. Only few of them provide support for both changes of individual process instances and the propagation of process type changes to a collection of related process instances. The knowledge about changes has not yet been exploited by any of these systems. To overcome this practical limitation, PAIS must capture the whole process life cycle and all kinds of changes in an integrated way. They must allow users to deviate from the predefined process in exceptional situations, and assist them in retrieving and reusing knowledge about previously performed changes. In this report we present a proof-of concept implementation of a learning adaptive PAIS. The prototype combines the ADEPT2 framework for dynamic process changes with concepts and methods provided by case-based reasoning(CBR) technology
